Sunday Discussion Post

Hello, and welcome to your weekly Sunday discussion post! This week's topic contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.

The Russo Brothers recently gave an interview in EW indicating that each timeline we see in Endgame is actually a spin-off reality. So, for example, when Steve decides to go back to the 1940s to be with Peggy, that timeline branches off from ours and becomes its own universe. (They also confirm that Bucky knew what Steve planned to do, and that this might be touched upon in the upcoming Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.)

What do you think of this interpretation? [personal profile] novembermond recently made a post outlining some potential, alternate universes created by the time jumps in Endgame. Which is your favorite? Were there any other alternate realities created by the time jumps? Comment here or in [personal profile] novembermond's post.

If you ask me all further movies should be set in this one because it has no Thanos and we saw enough of that by now.

SAME.

I was like "HE'S DEAD HE'S DEAD YAAAAAAAAAY NO MORE MONOLOGUES" and then when he showed up on the battlefield T leaned over to me and whispered "He's going to bore everyone to death."

I know everyone is loving on the actor's performance but he just. did. not. work for me. He was not threatening at all, and he sounded exactly like this one droning professor I had who could make anything boring.

I still can't make make sense of the "2019 Thanos was killed, 2014 Thanos came forward and was killed in 2024" or whenever because doesn't that mean Thanos was killed before he got the stones?

I really like the theory of a lot of alternate timelines, because I generally like this trope and it’s so much fun to imagine what could happen in each of them. Especially in the one where Loki escapes, because I love Loki. :)

The Russo Brothers recently gave an interview in EW indicating that each timeline we see in Endgame is actually a spin-off reality. So, for example, when Steve decides to go back to the 1940s to be with Peggy, that timeline branches off from ours and becomes its own universe.

It’s amuses me that the writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely said something completely different about Steve situation in this interview.

The relevant quote:

Christopher Markus: That is our theory. We are not experts on time travel, but the Ancient One specifically states that when you take an Infinity Stone out of a timeline it creates a new timeline. So Steve going back and just being there would not create a new timeline. So I reject the "Steve is in an alternate reality" theory. I do believe that there is simply a period in world history from about '48 to now where there are two Steve Rogers. And anyway, for a large chunk of that one of them is frozen in ice. So it's not like they'd be running into each other.

Heh... Truth to be told, I don’t think the writers thought about it much, besides “We want a happy ending for Steve.” :)

Yeah, I might not like a lot of the Russos' interpretations but at last they make sense. Markus and McFeeley don't and they tend to put things really poorly ("Fat Thor, LOL!" and "Bucky isn't innocent" and "Peggy was a girl Steve kissed once in a moving car, she and Sharon are distantly related" bullshit).

(Just fyi, your post title in and of itself is a pretty big spoiler for Endgame...)

My favorite new alternate reality is the 2012 one :D

I ate up the whole Multiverse - alternate realities - alternate timelines with a spoon AND then I asked for seconds, LOL

It's pretty solid from a creative perspective because you can legit go anywhere and still feel a degree of validation that [interpretation of what happened] is valid and/or canon. If (general) you need that, I mean.

Out of [personal profile] novembermond's timeline outline, my fave is 2014 because we can skip all of the Thanos' bs outright. It legit is the happiest possible timeline from that perspective at least.

I'm also partial to the alternate 2012!Loki escaped with the Tessaract because that means he can go anywhere and, yeah, Avengers Live in the Tower makes hella sense.

Basically, I'M HERE FOR ALL THE TIMELINES. #ImGreedyLikeThatHahahahaha
